Explore is given in October to all students in 9th grade. This test is used as an introduction to college placement exams and is used for placement in advanced classes. ELCA registers all students for the test.

PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test)

The PSAT is given in October to all students in grades 10-11. The test is used for practice for the SAT and Honors/AP level placement in the High School. ELCA registers all students for the test.

PSAT scores are normally returned before semester break. Going over the test – question by question – is a valuable way to improve SAT scores. Students who have questions about their score report should talk with the academic dean and/or visit: http://www.collegeboard.com/splash.

SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) and ACT (American College Test)

SAT Reasoning Test

Beginning with the winter/spring of the junior year, all students are strongly encouraged to take the SAT Reasoning test twice as a second semester junior and once as a senior. Dates for the test and registration information can be found on-line or in the Academic Dean's office.

SAT Subject Test

The SAT Subject test are generally required only by the more selective colleges; students should check individual requirements of each college they are considering to see if the Subject Tests are necessary and, if so, which tests are required. Three subject test may be taken at one testing time. The test dates are the same as the SAT Reasoning Test.

ACT

We encourage students to take the both the SAT and ACT in the event the SAT scores are not what you had hoped. The ACT is an achievement test measuring English, math, reading, and science skills. Some students naturally respond better to the nature of the questions on the ACT with more ease. Dates for tests and registration information can be found on-line or in the Academic Dean's office.

AP Exams

Students enrolled in Advanced Placement classes are required to sit for the final exam written by the college board. These tests begin the first week of May. The tests are scored on a scale of 1-5 with many colleges offering credit or advanced placement for scores of 3 or higher. The college board mails score results to students in July.
